Domaine
Karanika is a brand new three-storey, gravity-flow winery in
Levea, just outside Amyndeo in the far northwest of Macedonia
in Greece. We mainly produce wines made from Xinomavro
or Sourblack. And indigenous grape from Macedonia, Greece with
a history going back as far as Alexander the Great. Karanika
owns 7 vineyards in the Amyndeo appellation, together around
4 hectares. Most of the vineyards are planted with 15 to 20
year old Xinomavro grapes. We are particularly proud of a more
than 80 year old vineyard in Ajios Panteleimonos. The newly
planted vineyards in Levea next to the Domaine include Assyrtiko,
Limniona, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Mavrodaphne. Our winemaking
philosophy is minimal handling of grapes and
wines. That means: no pumping to transport must and wines, but
gravity, piegage instead of pumping over etc. Because of this
minimal handling there is no need for filtering the wines. Racking
and clarification is enough. This makes our wines crystal clear,
very aromatic, with considerable length. No bombastic heavyweight,
but straightforward wines.

The
winery is located next to lake Vegoritis at an altitude of 650
meters above sea level and is surrounded by the giant mountains
Voras, Vermio and Vigla. Therefore the climate is semicontinental
with cool nights in summer and cold winters with plenty rainfalls.

Rasto, Sotirtsko, Prisecca and Nivigratsko.
