Domaine
Karanika produces some exceptional wines made from Xinomavro
grape under the brandname XM. Karanika owns 7 small vineyards
in the Amyndeon appellation, together around 4 hectares. Most
of the vineyards are planted with 15 to 20 year old Xinomavro
grapes. Karanika is particularly proud of a more than 80 year
old vineyard in Ajios Panteleimonos. The newly planted vineyards
in Lakkia include Assyrtiko, Limnio, cabernet sauvignon, and Sauvignon
blanc.
The
XM wines can be ordered via this website, and are distributed
in several European countries.
Domaine
Karanika just completed her brand new, three-storey, gravity-flow
winery situated between the villages of Amyndeon, Vegora and Lakkia,
on a slope at the shores of lake Vegoritis.
Domaine
Karanika was founded by Laurens M. Hartman and Annette van Kampen.
Laurens is the son of a Greek mother and a Dutch father. He worked
for about 15 years in various management positions in publishing.
But one day he and his wife Annette decided to follow their heart:
producing top-quality wine in Greece. Over the years he was trained
as a winemaker in UC Davis, California and as an oenologist in
the Netherlands. He currently takes the WSET wine diploma exams.
Annette was born and raised on an old farm south of Rotterdam,
where her parents still live and work. Annette worked in several
management positions in media companies.
Laurens
is Karanika's oenologist and does all the marketing and sales,
Annette is Karanika's vineyardist and takes care of the 4 hectares
of vineyards.
Karanika's
mission is to contribute to a better image of Greek wine. Laurens
is convinced that the best way to prove that Greek wine can match
with the finest wines in the world is by making wine from Xinomavro
grapes from the cool continental terroir of northern Greece.
